Most Bronx County death record data is not included in this state death index, because New York City vital records, both modern and historical, are generally kept separately from the rest of the New York State records. Before 1898, the Bronx was not yet a part of New York City, and the registrations of deaths that happened within the borough were still being handled by the state Department of Health, not by the City. The Bronx also did not become its own county until 1914, when it was separated from New York County (Manhattan). After 1898, a small number of NYC records were still ocassionally included or referenced in this state index, often because a resident of the city may have died while upstate, or vice versa.
