Most New York County (Manhattan) death record data is not included in this state death index, because New York City vital records, both modern and historical, are generally kept separately from the rest of the New York State records. Until 1898, when the five boroughs consolidated, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and parts of the Bronx kept their own records, and reported them to the state. After 1898, a small number of NYC records were still ocassionally included or referenced in this state index, often because a resident of the city may have died while upstate, or vice versa.
